Finding a great tradie is easier said than done and if you have found the perfect one you should hold onto them with both hands and never let them go. It can be feast or famine when it comes to good trades and finding a good one can be a difficult task.
Owner builders rely on great trades such as electricians, joiners, plumbers and painters to do the fixes builders can’t do themselves and if you have a vision for your project you want people on your team that compliment the vision to help you get the end result you’re looking to achieve.
If you’ve done your owner builders course online and you’re looking for the perfect tradie, here are a couple of things to consider in your quest.
Shop around for your trades
While you might want to snap up the first tradie, you find it is worth shopping around to find out what the going rate is for trades in your local area and make sure they are providing a quote that includes all the parts, labour, taxes and anything else that may pop up in the job.
Be aware of only engaging registered trades that have current licences and keep in mind that cheapest is not always best and you really do get what you pay for.
Choose someone that you can hang around with easily
While you don’t need to be best mates, if you are working on a major renovation project owner builders should make sure the trades they engage are someone they want to hang around with on a regular basis.
Choosing trades that have an easy going nature and have the experience and communication skills that suit your job is essential.
Ask around for a tradesperson who your friends or family have used
There is nothing better than a recommendation and if you are a local owner builder who has friends in the surrounding areas asking for recommendations is a great way to find someone who works well and does a good job. Independent operators don’t always spend time marketing themselves and get most of their work from word of mouth in and around the local area.
Focus on someone who doesn’t chin wag
As great as it is to have a chat, avoid using a tradesperson who like to have a chat all day. Chatting can be fine during smoko, but it can also be downright distracting for licenced owner builders trying to stick to a timeframe.
