What to become a better childcare educator? Then picture yourself through the eyes of a parent. By doing so, you will see three key elements that are commonplace amongst parents in what they expect from their chosen childcare provider.
1. CARE
Parents want to know their children are adequately cared for. And we don’t mean just providing food, water and toileting hygiene. (Although they are extremely important also...) But we are referring to care and compassion. Parents want to know someone is there if their child needs a hug, a friendly word, or a pat on the back to sleep. They want to know their child is cared for as they are at home.
2. SAFETY
There is nothing more powerful than a parent when their child is in harm’s way. We’ve heard the stories of mothers lifting heavy vehicles to free their trapped child. Providing a safe environment for children to play, learn and interact is a fundamental expectation and requirement of any childcare operator.
3. FUN
Fun, fun, fun. A child’s laughter fills the earth with happiness – as well as a parent’s heart. If a parent or significant other picks their child up from childcare happy and laughing, then your job has been done. Providing fun, varied and interactive learning and play experiences is vital to each child’s enjoyment of their care. So much of a child’s physical, emotional and mental development occurs at this age – so ensuring it is done in a fun environment is essential.
So take a step back. See yourself through the eyes of a parent. Be honest and provide yourself with constructive criticism. Would you be happy leaving your child in your care? Working towards an undeniable ‘yes’ should be your aim each and every day.
